The National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course-Alive at 25. An instructor for the NSC will come to the class and teach your beginning driver what we believe is the best course in defensive driving. An additional certificate of completion will be earned after completing this module. Highly interactive program teaching young drivers how to take control of situations by taking responsibility for their own driving behavior.

THE CLASSROOM STUDY part of the course involves establishing that a driver's license is a true privilege, and understanding an automobile is a potential 3-5 thousand pound weapon. We will teach operating a vehicle involves potential life-altering decisions each second that elapses. A collision has the potential to take away all that we value most in life: Family, Health, Time and Money.

Driver Education in Louisiana will still consist of 30 hours of classroom study. But instead of only 6 (six) hours of behind-the-wheel training it is increased to a total of 8 (eight) hours of behind-the-wheel training.1

  • Also, 14 year olds will not be allowed to start the classroom portion of the course. For now on, the student must be at least 15 years old prior to starting the classroom portion.
  • Parent / Guardian must provide at least 35 hours behind-the-wheel training with their beginning driver prior to obtaining an Intermediate or Full License.

1Exceptions will be for students who enrolled and started the classroom portion prior to January 2009. They would then be allowed to finish the course and only 6 (six) hours behind-the-wheel training.

BEHIND-THE-WHEEL TRAINING is a critical part of the student's training. We give individualized driving instruction with specific objectives, allowing the beginning driver's behind-the-wheel time to be most productive. Each student is limited only by their current abilities and the amount of hours in their driver program. We allow only one (1) student in the vehicle, not wanting to distract attention away from learning to drive safely, courteously and legally.

Behind-the-Wheel Highlights:

  • Automatic and economical vehicles.

  • All driver education vehicles are required to have dual brakes.

  • Individualized Driving Instruction. We progress at the beginning drivers rate, without other teens to embarrass them. If there are to be any distractions in the vehicle, they should come from the instructor only.

Qualified, Trained Instructors. Our instructors get more than double the training required by the state. New instructors with DE experience still must go through our training course.

Specific Lesson Objectives. Our instructors do not "cruise" the road aimlessly. Each lesson is filled with productivity.

Vehicle Awareness. A safe driver knows the vehicle they're driving and knows what to do to keep from damaging it.

Intersection Awareness. Know where you might get hit from. Over 40% of the crashes that a "good" driver get into happen here. We have a different approach that allows the beginning driver to better understand intersection problems.

Space Cushion Management. Controlling space around your vehicle takes a pro-active driver and discipline. These skills do not just happen naturally.

Visual Scanning Skills. Scanning "outside" the lines to find dangers, separate them and how to compromise hazards.

Hand-to-Hand Steering (9-3, 8-4). Because of airbag safety and precise steering, we have adopted this type of steering as the main technique. We also teach that Hand-over-Hand and One-Hand steering have their place as well.

Detailed Evaluations. Insights from the instructor as to where the beginning driver needs more attention/practice. A copy is give to each student after each lesson.

8 (eight) hours Behind-the-Wheel. We will actually complete the newly required eight hours behind-the-wheel.

We provide the OMV (DMV) Road Test to anyone who wishes to experience an alternative to waiting in long lines just to wait again or being told no road test available. Our students may take the road test anytime after they receive their learner's permit. However, they can not go back to the DMV to use this certificate (assuming they pass) until after they have had the learner's permit for 180 days or until they turn 16 years of age, whichever is longest. $30 FOR ALUMNI

All Class schedules are subject to change and to change without notice
