  • Will driver's education help me with the state test?
    • Yes, both of our courses have proved to be helpful.
    • We have designed a Louisiana state specific study sheet and hand-out that all of our students who complete the classroom obtain.
    • It also includes a step-by-step procedure and what to bring to the "DMV"

How long does it take to learn to drive?
    • Wow, that is the question most commonly asked by beginning drivers and their parents. Of course it's an impossible question to answer because of the many individual differences among people.
    • It's the same as asking how long will it take to learn to type, swim, ride a bicycle or any other such skill, for these types of skills are all motor skills and depend on how well we coordinate our hands, feet and eyes.
    • Typically it it suggested that a beginning driver complete as much as 120 hours behind-the-wheel training. Only a small portion (6-Hours) is usually with a professional instructor. We gear our lessons to show you how to practice proficiently.

Are all driver education courses the same?

    NO !

We are the driving school who are the same owners here in Slidell for 16 years. We have a reputation of fun activities and interactive learning. We never allow more than one student in the driver ed vehicle. We are contributors not only to our text book in class but the same test book that is used nationally.  We have contributed to the state DMV book and also came up the name "RYAN ACT" for the states GDL law.

    • Although most are state certified either through the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Office of Motor Vehicles or Public School systems they indeed are not the same curriculum.
    • Some commercial driver education companies in our area not in good standing with the state.
    • Others aren't elegible to be members of driving school associations:  State Association   National Association
    • Public school driver education programs traditionally do not deliver a program that is structured. They mostly use the DMV book as their "teaching guide" and the behind-the-wheel portion is just as inadequate.
    • Public school driver ed, typically it is not worth the 1/2 credit in time wasted and credit that could otherwise be earned toward TOPS.
    • Commercial driving schools. Do your homework. Visit the facility. Ask personal questions. Ask other parents and older teens questions. Questions like: How long have you been in business. How long have your instructors been teaching driver education training? What is the classroom facility like? Is it conducive to learning?

Will there be other students allowed in the vehicle with me?
    • No, though it is not illegal for either a public or private driving school to allow other students in the vehicle, it is Louisiana Driving School's policy that only one-student be in the vehicle. We will allow interpretors, but must be approved by the driving school.
    • Not even the "Piggy Backing" is allowed at our school This is when you will be picked-up by another student and driven to their drop off. When you drive you will have to do the same.
    • We have a planned agenda for the behind-the-wheel process that allows the instructor and student to understand maneuvers and experiences out on the road.

What's the earliest age I can start DE?
    • You can't start the classroom portion until age 15.
    • Louisiana Driving School works under a contract that the course must be completed within 60 days. Therefore, the student needs to be available to complete the behind-the-wheel portion.  We will also work with the individual on this.

Has the driving age changed to 17?
    • Yes, since 1998 you can't get a driver's license until age 17.
    • But, you may get a restricted (intermediate) license at age 16 YOA. The prerequisite is that you have obtained a learner's permit and held it at least for 180 days.
    • Which is a license (not a permit) that will let you drive with or without a licensed adult.

How does the license process work?
    • All applicants must complete some type of course before applying at the DMV (OMV)
    • 15 and 16 YOA must complete the 38 Hour Course to apply for a learner's permit.
    • 17 YOA may apply for a learner's permit or a full license after completing a course.
    • 15 and 16 YOA must keep the learner's permit for 180 days or until 16 YOA, whichever is longest.
    • 17 YOA who apply for a learner's permit only have to keep it for 30 days.
    • 16 YOA may apply for the restricted license (intermediate) only after holding LP for 180 days.
    • 17 YOA may not graduate into a restricted license.

May I practice with someone else?
    • No.
    • You may not practice on a public road without a license or learner's permit.
    • Wait, until you have obtained a learners' permit. Or get a license and treat it like a permit if you need more practice.
    • Even those friends or relatives who volunteer to take you out for practice may be well-meaning. They may teach you the wrong things or pass along their bad habits.
    • Learn how to practice from our professional staff.

Will the DMV require me to parellel park?
    • No. Not in Slidell or with us. My understanding is none of the DMV's ask  this of an applicant here in this state. We do practice this maneuver with most of our students, but it is not part of any Road Skills Test.
    • Straight (perpendicular) parking only.
    • How to Fail at parking with the DMV. Hit something or accumulated too many points.
